Didn't delete my reddit account and probably won't. Just leaving it abandoned and lurk every once in a while.

as someone pointed out in this comment, I don't think deleting all the content we generated thoughout the years is a good idea. I still get replies on years old posts from people who had that same exact question, and the amount of information I actively find on reddit is crazy. Reddit won't care about deleted accounts and posts (and they will only be a minority anyway), and I think doing so is a disservice to every person on the web.

Unless you only posted in r/memes and r/askreddit lol

I get that, but Reddit will be (and has already been) monetizing the content you created. They will also be selling the content to LLMs (large language models) to train AI models. So while I agree you are doing a disservice to people looking for useful content, you are also allowing Reddit / spez etc to monetize your content while giving a big finger to mods, volunteers, communities and 3rd party app developers.

I've been a long time user on Reddit. Just deleted all my posts and comments (been mostly a lurker, so not much there) using shreddit, then deleted my Reddit account and uninstalled the app (Boost - loved it) from my phone. I'm done with Reddit, the AMA and behaviour of u/spez and the other Reddit admins was just too much.

I hope I get some time back from stupidly browsing Reddit, but also don't want to miss out on some of the communities (r/adventofcode specifically, hope they make it over to Lemmy at some point).

I already deleted all my comments and posts and when the time comes and RIF is down I'll delete my whole account.

I've been lurking on regularly cycled usernames, so that was pretty easily done. I haven't deleted Slide yet, but since it'll stop working on 30th, that's a given. I'm going to try my best to help build up the niche communities like hardware focused ones on lemmy

I deleted the apps on my phone and my ipad so I don't get any push notifications. I will probably only post on here. There are some communities I kinda rely on when it comes to information, tutorials etc. that are not really existing here. So I'm trying to kinda slowly move everything over here as far as I can do that. Hoping that more and more communites will be coming over too.

I honestly prefer the interface and how clean everything is here. Makes me wanna use reddit as little as possible lmao

You can create communities and spread the word about their existence.

[โ€“] honk@feddit.de 0 points 1 year ago

I mean yes I can do that. But I would be just creating 15 communties that would be ghost towns :D

[โ€“] mrmaine@feddit.de 0 points 1 year ago

Not yet. I will do so by the end of June.

[โ€“] moonleay@feddit.de 0 points 1 year ago

I cleared my post and comment history. I probably will delete my account after the free API shuts down.

[โ€“] eight_byte@feddit.de 0 points 1 year ago

Also been on Reddit for more than 12 years now. But with recent development regarding third party apps, I've made my peace with it. As soon as those apps shut down, I'll abandon my Reddit account. However, I'll not be going to delete my post and comments, since I don't see any sense in doing so. Reddit will not care as some kind of protest, and my data should have already been scraped by dozens of search engines and AI-training companies anyway.

[โ€“] Rhinoceros@lemmy.ml 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Planning on deleting my alt accounts, however I'm not going to delete my main account, I will just programmatically delete all my posts and comments.

I suspect that deleting accounts won't be what Reddit is looking at anyway, all they'll care about is ad revenue, and my accounts which were not generating any revenue will not bother them in the slightest.

Editing and deleting comments is about taking some life, interactions and knowledge off the platform so it will lower the value of the platform. Deleting knowledge off the internet isn't something i endorse, but everyone can decide for themselves.

I don't really want to delete content potential googlers could stumble upon and be helped by, but I've replaced the Relay shortcut on my homescreen with a Jerboa shortcut. That's as good as deleted cause that's all I access reddit through.

[โ€“] Kissaki@feddit.de 0 points 1 year ago

I value my content and the communities too much (despite its problems). I won't be deleting my account, and definitely not the content I posted.

I don't know yet what will happen to my usage and contribution level. Maybe it will only be on desktop PC from now on. We will see.

I think Iโ€™m going to on my next day off. During the blackout. See ya never spez!

[โ€“] Screak42@lemmy.ml 0 points 1 year ago (1 children)

Jup. Deleted all my posts, guides and comments yesterday.

I think it's somewhat dramatic for the "future" since so much of reddit is absolutley great knowledge. I can't count how many times a reddit post or comment has helped me solve all kinds of weird problems...

I'm in the EU so I did a GDPR data request before deleting and essentially have a backup of all my own content. I'll filter through it and put on Lemmy or my blog what I think is worth keeping.

[โ€“] awdsns@feddit.de 0 points 1 year ago

That's a good idea! I understand the sentiment of leaving a final "fuck you" to Reddit, but at the same time the thought of losing the treasure trove of accumulated knowledge stored there pains me.

Just did it. removed everything with the PowerDelete script, then deleted my 12 year old account. Sad. I deleted all comments, too. Like many people here I find it sad, that this information is gone, but I do not want to give reddit traffic for my personal content.
