The Blair Witch Project often catches hate, but in it's time it was pretty fucking wild. The real-life stress of the actors shines through. Yeah, the ending though. All I remember was the theater collectively expressing, "Uh. What?" and filing out quietly.
Cloverfield was another good one at the time, if you could stand the shaky cam.
I’m gonna have to go with REC! The reason for filming was believable, plus it being an all around great movie in general
I really liked BWP and REC, and the usuals.
But I have to say, Trollhunter. Just a fun movie, I'm grinning even thinking of it. The dull humor just works for me.
Other good ones, though maybe not horror: punishment park, chronicle

So many people gave a shout out to BWP already I'm gonna go with my second : Creep.
The acting is so good, I felt uneasy the whole time.
