What happens to my instance if my domain expires? (sh.itjust.works)

I recently was gifted a raspberry pi 5 and was looking at domains to buy to host my own instance. What happens to my instance if the domain expires?

Also, do freenom and .tk just not allow new domains to be registered anymore?

Once your domain expires and you don't renew it, Lemmy becomes inaccessible and also the posts stop federating.

Aside from using free domains, you could just pay $5 per year and buy one and it's your's.
