I'm starting to think the tariffs are just another one of his grifter scams. He was going to offer foreign governments a deal "send me a million bucks and I'll make sure your country doesn't have to pay the extra tariffs". China threw a wrench into it all by not even feigning interest in dealing with him.

He has always been obsessed with tariffs, even when he had no political aspirations. At no point in time has he ever had a correct comprehension of how they actually work

I was driving into work a couple weeks ago and NPR was playing a clip of him calling into a radio show and complaining about trade imbalances and the need for tariffs. That clip was taken from 1989...
