she could have added "after all, we're white, we're westerners, we thought that this sort of thing only applied to people of colour".
the thing is, fascism is colonialism applied to white people in the colonial powers. that's why to some people it's so revolting, at least when compared to military thugs torturing and disappearing people in poor countries; no, that's expected from them.
