I think people forget that conscription ended years ago, and military personnel do get paid.

At least here in Australia, not one person I know joined to "serve their country". It was literally for lots of other reasons

They get paid well. They're doing a job and people should respect everyone equally, including waiters or even people working in stores

Most people in the military feel the same. Everyone I knew when I was in hated being thanked for their service. Most didn't join to serve their country, they joined for the benefits that come with it.
