Honestly, i feel like there is a lot less textual evidence for homoerotiticism in the iliad than people want to believe. Not saying it isnt there on some level, and maybe there's a wider tradition outside the epic cycle, but i think there relationship is ambiguous enough that old historians can be forgiven the "friends" label.
It's a common interpretation in the wider tradition, even if Homer did not necessarily intend it
