That Hideous Strength by C. S. Lewis, third book in the Cosmic Trilogy/Space Trilogy.

Yes, Lewis did write some science fiction which is completely wild. The quality is varying, but it certainly is interesting. Of course, the protagonists are academics only, and at one point C. S. Lewis himself even appears. Oh, and there is space travel, aliens and a philologist stuck on Mars.
