I think the problem is "millimeter-wave beams of light to vaporize rock" being used to dig 12 mile deep holes all over the earth. I've never heard of such a thing and am skeptical.
Also, everyone knows if you dig too deep you find demons and other fun stuff.

Yeah, the dæmons make the whole thing very expensive. You'd have to contain them, regularly send kill squads, can't dump their bodies on regular dumps (you'd basically have to use the pits of hell) and sometimes they become personal demons which are really annoying and hard to get rid of.
