While the Silk Road has been replaced by shipping lanes and air-freight, you can still find the ancient bazaar atmosphere in pretty much any major city in Iran.

This is one of my favorite campsites ever. This is sunrise over Evolution Creek and McClure Meadow, in the high country of the Sierra Nevada mountains, in Kings Canyon National Park, in California. I’m fortunate enough to live relatively close, in Bishop, California. Still, there are no roads here - you must make your way on foot, or by horseback or pack train.

I backpacked the roughly fifty mile loop, from North Lake to South Lake. Some do it quickly, but I enjoyed taking seven days for the loop.

Enjoy!

Iwakuni is where my parents met, in 1960. My little sister and I visited in March of this year, and were able to scatter my older sister’s ashes in the Nishiki river, and commit them to our ancestors. I haven’t visited the Kintai Bridge since I was a boy. It still looks the same. Fond memories…

Took this back in March, while visiting our daughter, who is teaching English in Japan for this past year. We took the opportunity to take a couple of weeks to travel around Japan. She is in Hirado, south of Nagasaki. I didn’t want to haul my DSLR, so I made do with the phone camera.

The best time of the year for going on a self-drive safari is the next two-three months. It's dry season, so not too much green for the animals to hide in. (Some animals still manage to hide just fine, though, as seen here.) And there's no mosquitoes to worry about until the rains begin, so no malaria either.

There's a fairly high entrance fee for the park per day for foreign visitors, but if you buy an "annual pass" (the Wild Card), after a week you're there "for free" for as long as you want. And it's really, really easy to spend two or even three weeks just driving around in this huge park, staying in a different camp every night.

I am on a bicycle tour right now and came past this beauty of a scene cycling the Passo Gavia. Incredible mountain pass.

Got this photo from a plane in 2005 flying from Jakarta to Bali!

Those terrible cardboard things that you just never knew what you were going to get until they were developed? I decided on my last trip I'd make up a pretend set of prints to share with my online friends. Below is the sample. I knew there'd be some really exciting shots, so I ordered double prints when I sent it in for processing. Woo Hoo!!

(apologies if (semi-)humor posts are not allowed here)

Went to a festival and had 1 day before the festival started. Hiked up the nearby mountain and was greeted with semi frozen lakes and plenty of snow. Being my first time seeing snow it was an amazing day, even got to slide down some of it on my rain jacket.

I took this photo after about an hour of hiking from the buildings in the center of this photo, up on Platåfjellet mountain right next to town.

High meadow in the Nubra Shyok Wildlife Sanctuary in Ladakh/North India. Somewhere on the snowfield in the background is the Lasirmu Pass at 5.400m/17.700ft that we crossed earlier.
