Welcome to the lemmy.world community for Portland, Oregon!

This community has kind of been empty since it was created, I'm hoping to change that!

Unlike "other" Portland communities you may have seen "elsewhere", I believe in a "warts and all" approach. You are free to take off your Rose tinted glasses and talk about topics that are dragging our city down.

At the same time, sunset pics, snowmageddon, traffic monster, cones, that's all welcome as well. Let's collectively keep Portland weird!

2024 is going to be an interesting year politically with all the changes to city government, I will attempt to tag political threads with a [Politics] tag and encourage users to do so as well.

Other than the lemmy.world restrictions on spam, copyrighted material, and adult material (USE that NSFW tag!), there's only one real way to get in trouble here:

  1. Don't attack other users.

It's OK to go after Teargas Ted, it's OK to say Rene Gonzales is a fascist, ACAB, BLM, whatever floats your boat (WEFYB).

It's NOT OK to attack or diminish another user. Feel free to disagree, you can point out the many ways you think they're wrong, just don't start throwing perjoratives AT OTHER USERS.

My local Wincos had a self checkout, and only have 1 or 2 cashiers open. They used to have two security guards and three cashiers managing the self checkout, with a massive line of people all the way to the back. It was like that for two years.

Today, I visited and they took the whole thing down, while having 5 checkout lines open. No security guards.

Real pleasant experience.

"90 pounds of methamphetamine, 11 pounds of fentanyl, and 3.8 pounds of heroin"

The fentanyl is the big one here. "Two milligrams of fentanyl can be lethal depending on a person’s body size, tolerance and past usage."

https://www.dea.gov/resources/facts-about-fentanyl

So... 11 pounds? 4,989,516.07 mg? 2,494,758.035 fatal doses.

“We had an axe that was thrown through our tea house window in the middle of the night and other projectiles thrown at Lan Su, so it felt necessary,” Nye said.

A number of other concerning incidents have also happened recently, such as when someone smeared “human feces” on the exterior garden walls, Nyes said.

Among 47 traffic stops, police arrested 11 people and towed 10 vehicles. Some vehicles were lost to asset forfeiture, meaning the drivers lost the car permanently by participating in street racing. Most takeovers were broken up in minutes, police said in a news release.

In March, Portland General Electric requested a 7.4% increase but increased that request last month. Pacific Power has also requested a rate hike, of 11.9%.

"The St. Johns Review, a community newspaper circulated throughout 13 neighborhoods in North Portland, has published a weekly or monthly print edition for nearly 120 years.

There will be no July issue."

"first-time home buyers in the city looking to purchase a home will need to save at least $16,427 a year—or $45.01 per day—for five years in order to afford a median home price of $547,575.

Researchers based their findings on saving for a down payment of $82,136, or 15%."

Your mileage may vary. I did it in less time with $30,000 down on a $390,000 house, but that was also in 2021 with 3.25% interest.

Portland lost its only 24/7 sobering center in 2019. Multnomah County is working on a replacement, but recently delayed the opening to 2026.

This story just keeps getting better the more you read it...

It starts off with a bad landlord not fixing the AC, naturally.

But the tenant complaining is the architecture firm that DESIGNED the heating and AC system.

"In a press release, Ankrom touted how exposed timber beams mixed with concrete, glass and steel to create a modern aesthetic. It added that inside its space, “large fans operate in tandem with operable windows to circulate air, and a custom software program suggests appropriate times for opening windows rather than solely relying on the HVAC system.”"

And the guy running the architecture company? "Company President Dave Heater did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Thursday."

LOL. You can't make this up!

I seem to remember at the time everyone was saying "This doesn't sound like a good idea, let's see how that works out for you..."

Well...
