There’s a scene in “Not Not Jazz,” a film about the fusion jazz trio Medeski Martin & Wood, where the camera prowls around bassist Chris Wood as he slowly saws his upright bass on an upstate New York tennis court dotted with fallen leaves. There are a lot of scenes like that in “Not Not Jazz.” I suspect that if you’re as interested in the process of music as in the result, it’ll be one of the elements you’ll like most about the movie.

If you dig Louis Armstrong and his Hot Five, this will go down like 20 year old scotch.

For over a decade Tuba Skinny has grown steadily in popularity, releasing twelve albums and touring all over the world. ... While they’ve become known as world-class interpreters of traditional jazz, over the years they’ve branched out into jug band music, spirituals, country blues, string band music, ragtime, and New Orleans R&B. Their approach is a true reflection of Americana, encompassing the full genealogy of popular American music from an early 20th century perspective.

An absolute behemoth of an album; fifty plus musicians, all at once at times, creating the grandest wall of sounds.

I was listening to this EP today and started searching around for images of Chet in Italy from these years (1960 - '62) when I stumbled across this blog post. It's got all sorts of interesting tid bits about Chet's life from this ear. Good read and pictures, if you're into it.

When he was in Lucca, Chet Baker always stayed at the Hotel Universo, room 15 where, sitting on the windowsill, he would often play his trumpet. Room 15, still today highly requested by his fans, looks onto the piazza of the Teatro del Giglio where Chet held several concerts. But maybe, for him, the most exciting concert held there was the one organized in his honor on December 15, 1961 by his jazz friends Giovanni Tommaso, Franco Mondini, Antonello Vannucchi and Amedeo Tommasi, on the day he was left the San Giorgio prison in Lucca, following one year of detention.
