Anyone else remember when Win10 was gonna be the last time you'd ever need to buy Windows?

They were right, it's the last time I'm buying windows

Windows 10 is the last Windows!

And then remember when actual Microsoft PR went crazy to correct Jerry Nixons dumb choice of words but everyone ignored it because it wasn’t as interesting?

No, I don’t remember that.

“When I reached out to Microsoft about Nixon's comments, the company didn't dismiss them at all.”

And when you continue reading the article, you can see even the article's author expected Windows 11, because the message here was just that existing versions of Windows will continue getting updates, not that there won't be future version of Windows.

There was nothing to dismiss about the comment, if you don't misinterpret it.

Way ahead. I tried Linux earlier this year hoping I could learn to get used to it in time before the end of support for 10 and it turned out to be a far smoother transition that I anticipated. I haven't booted my Windows partition since.

I think for most users it should be, and getting better all the time.

Just if you play games with anticheat, or use something just incompatible like Adobe products.

Probably best not to boot it, or windows update might overwrite Grub.

My steam deck showed me that I didn't need windows anymore, just waiting to change my pc to make the switch.. If I get a job someday

In case you didn't know, save yourself some headaches and avoid NVidia GPUs for your new build.

[–] Noodle07@lemmy.world 1 points 1 month ago

I'll keep my current nvidia gpu actually x)

That's even shorter than Windows XP! And technology hasn't advanced nearly as much as during those 14 years

And Windows 10 was supposed to be the last release becoming a rolling release. Only a sucker would have actually believed that.

[–] dev_null@lemmy.ml -1 points 1 month ago

Yes, only a sucker would have believed that, because it was manufactured clickbait, not something Microsoft ever said.

[–] TehBamski@lemmy.world 7 points 1 month ago (1 children)

I hope Windows 12 comes out before then. I'm not interested in switching to Windows 11.

[–] Valmond@lemmy.world 2 points 1 month ago

I'm holding out for windows 13

Right as they have begun rolling out Copilot... It's a dystopian world we are about to be a part of, if you don't already think we're living in it now. Viva la Linux!

[–] wizardbeard@lemmy.dbzer0.com 4 points 1 month ago

As always, there will be ways to point Windows Update at the long term support channels meant for government and people who have contracted support with Microsoft.

CoPilot and Recall are both disable-able, and I beilieve CoPilot can be fully uninstalled. If you don't have a Pro license for Windows (giving you access to Group Policy) it's a good idea to use MASGrave to activate as Pro for free. Most of these settings are best controlled through Group Policy, as that is Microsoft's official tool meant for SysAdmins to manage this zort of thing.

Still, terrible look for Microsoft, great time to try Linux. Just not so end of the world as a lot of articles seem to indicate.
