Thank God climate change isn't real or this would be concerning.

By the Saffir Simpson scale, the Cat 5 threshold is 157 mph sustained winds, and the proposed Cat 6 threshold was originally 180 mph, and more lately 192 to 195 mph sustained winds.

Of course, this focuses on wind speed intensity, when more often the more damaging (to people and property) element is storm surge.

... Which is currently estimated to be up to 15 feet near the center of the hurricane when it makes landfall as likely a Cat 3.

EDIT: I am now seeing some meteorologists say it may make landfall as a Cat 4.

Is this thing thrashing the coast of mexico right now ?

Everyone seems to be talking about florida.

[–] GiddyGap@lemm.ee 10 points 2 months ago

Everyone's focused on their own safety, which is probably understandable in a situation like this. Lots of coverage of the situation in Mexico in Mexican media.

The most powerful winds were well off the coast in Mexico, still i think the surge was 4-6 feet.

Milton would be the ultimate movie nerd.

But I'm afraid Malvin has never lost that crown.

Life blessed me with the body of Maury Chaykin and the voice of Eddie Deetzen.

And everyday I fail to live up to those blessings.

[–] FlyingSquid@lemmy.world 1 points 2 months ago

As long as you fail to live up to the life of Eddie Deezen, I think you're fine.

Because he cray cray.

And he's a Scientologist, but I repeat myself.

Does anyone have coverage of the people in the Yucatan? I am legit curious and worried for the Mexicans living there. Fuck Florida.
