Yea as a sober alcoholic and former heavy drug abuser, alcohol withdrawal is by far the worst I’ve ever experienced.

About half of people with alcoholism will develop withdrawal symptoms upon reducing their use. Of these, 3% to 5% develop DTs or have seizures.

Note the fatalitiy rate of DT is 1-4%. Everything about alcoholism makes it seem so much worse than you'd pick up from societal queues

Mortality without treatment is between 15% and 40%.
