Mr. Snail, can you tell me why it's Istanbul not Constantinople?

[–] colforge@lemm.ee 27 points 3 days ago (1 children)

“This topic has already been thoroughly covered by They Might Be Giants, as mentioned in my book… which you can buy… right here.”

[–] kambusha@sh.itjust.works 18 points 3 days ago

That's nobody's business but the Turks

[–] cellardoor@lemmy.world 7 points 2 days ago (1 children)

Because Istanbul was Constantinople, now it's Istanbul, not Constantinople.

[–] NoneOfUrBusiness@fedia.io 11 points 3 days ago

Because Constantinople is a mouthful. Source: Me.

from the earth can you really tell the sun is round? obviously we can tell from space but down here it's so bright it could really be a cube for all we know

[–] rasbora@lemm.ee 11 points 2 days ago

Just stare at it for long enough and you’ll be able to tell by the shape it burned into your retina.

During sunsets you can see it easily

[–] stebo02@lemmy.dbzer0.com 1 points 2 days ago

It might seem circular during a sunset, but if it were a cube it would still seem circular just because of all the scattering in the atmosphere

We can see it's round during an eclipse.

[–] letsgo@lemm.ee 1 points 1 day ago

Not if the moon is also square.

Most Snails also can't see in colour, and therefore could not ask why the sky is blue.

woahh i knew this comic was bs! at least they got the part where snails can talk and write books right

[–] epicstove@lemmy.ca 3 points 2 days ago

When you look at it for a bit you'll see its a circle.

There were dead ass people who would just sit and stare at the sun. Ancient astronomy was crazy.

[–] multifariace@lemmy.world 8 points 2 days ago (1 children)

The sun is a fiery, life-giving snail that is creeps across the pale blue outer shell of the great mother snail we live upon.

[–] edgemaster72@lemmy.world 3 points 2 days ago

That's a lot better than when the sun was a deadly lazer

Isn't this scientology
