Maybe it's also that an overly simplistic model just isn't that great at the end of the day?
It also might be more appropriate to consider conservatism a derivative product of liberalism rather than counter or orthogonal to it, since conservatism effectively depends on liberalism as a baseline to be in retrograde by comparison. It also has its roots in liberalism.
Sometimes I think the 4 point political compass has done more damage to political understanding than improved it.
If this were still the time of Romney or McCain I'd agree with you
