Big brain tech dude got yet another clueless take over at HackerNews etc? Here's the place to vent. Orange site, VC foolishness, all welcome.

This is not debate club. Unless it’s amusing debate.

Have a sneer percolating in your system but not enough time/energy to make a whole post about it? Go forth and be mid!

Any awful.systems sub may be subsneered in this subthread, techtakes or no.

If your sneer seems higher quality than you thought, feel free to cut’n’paste it into its own post, there’s no quota for posting and the bar really isn’t that high

The post Xitter web has spawned soo many “esoteric” right wing freaks, but there’s no appropriate sneer-space for them. I’m talking redscare-ish, reality challenged “culture critics” who write about everything but understand nothing. I’m talking about reply-guys who make the same 6 tweets about the same 3 subjects. They’re inescapable at this point, yet I don’t see them mocked (as much as they should be)
Like, there was one dude a while back who insisted that women couldn’t be surgeons because they didn’t believe in the moon or in stars? I think each and every one of these guys is uniquely fucked up and if I can’t escape them, I would love to sneer at them.

“It is soulless. There is no personality to it. There is no voice. Read a bunch of dialogue in an AI generated story and all the dialogue reads the same. No character personality comes through,” she said. Generated text also tends to lack a strong sense of place, she’s observed; the settings of the stories are either overly-detailed for popular locations, or too vague, because large language models can’t imagine new worlds and can only draw from existing works that have been scraped into its training data.

Matt Mullenweg is the CEO of WordPress. He recently had a bout of extreme shitheadry and massively transphobic behaviour on his product fucking Tumblr of all the fucking places to be a transphobe. Nobody there is delighted with him at present. His own staff are publicly posting what a shithead he is on the official Tumblr staff account!

So it turns out Mullenweg’s been like this for more than a few years now, it’s just the maggots are finally bursting through the skin.

The linked post is the tale of how wordpress.com was completely fucked around in 2019 for a signup increase of 0.1 percent!!!

This change also increase free account churn by 20 percent. But that officially didn’t matter, free users weren’t worth a lot.

Everything became about growth hacking. Everything became thinly-veiled dark patterns. In our private dev slack channels, we joked that since it was impossible to make it smaller or less conspicuous, the next thing the growth team was going to ask us to do was to make the ‘free plan’ button flee away from the mouse pointer when the user tried to click it. We kept making our product worse, we kept consciously crippling the cheaper versions so we could force people to move to the more expensive options.

The dude asked to move from wordpress.com to Tumblr. Guess what?

So I requested to move to tumblr, because I thought the pastures were greener over there. But it was all the same: Adding login walls to what we were pretending to be “the last bastion of the free internet”, cramping in embarrasingly obvious money-making schemes disguised as features, and making them silently opt-out instead of opt-in so the less people the possible would deactivate them, having to fend off the pressure from the CEO to make everything algorithmic timelines because, you know, tiktok makes a lot of money and why aren’t we, etc etc.

that CEO was of course Matt Mullenweg.

All platforms are grass. Tomorrow we die. Shitpost the day.

But remember the enshittifiers responsible. They really fucking hate being named.

Google responded to Ed, Ed responds.

I've suggested the orange site changes the title to "In response to Google?" to keep up with latest practices around there. https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=40164393

An AI company has been generating porn with gamers' idle GPU time in exchange for Fortnite skins and Roblox gift cards

"some workloads may generate images, text or video of a mature nature", and that any adult content generated is wiped from a users system as soon as the workload is completed.

However, one of Salad's clients is CivitAi, a platform for sharing AI generated images which has previously been investigated by 404 media. It found that the service hosts image generating AI models of specific people, whose image can then be combined with pornographic AI models to generate non-consensual sexual images.

surprise, Amazon’s godawful surveillance grocery stores were just exploiting hidden labor and calling it innovation, and even that was too expensive

even worse, the few times I’ve seen one of these fucking things in the wild, it still had 1-2 employees hovering near the entrance to make sure nobody did the utterly obvious (fuck with the payment system and get free shit), a job that’s also known as a fucking cashier, but with much worse pay, much harder labor (physically stopping shoplifters), and no counter to lean on or opportunity to even sit down

A tweet from ardent promptfondler Misha Saul (archive):

A friend sent me MRI brain scan results and I put it through Claude.

No other AI would provide a diagnosis, Claude did.

Claude found an aggressive tumour.

The radiologist report came back clean.

I annoyed the radiologists until they re-checked. They did so with 3 radiologists and their own AI. Came back clean, so looks like Claude was wrong.

But looks how convincing Claude sounds! We're still early...

Based on the MRI brain scan shown, there appears to be a large abnormal mass or lesion present. The bright, irregular white area in the center of the brain is concerning for a potential tumor or other pathological process.

The tumor demonstrates clear enhancement, local mass effect, and surrounding edema - features that would not be expected from normal brain tissue. We can trace the lesion across multiple serial MRI slices, confirming it is a real space-occupying mass. The location is also typical for a primary glioma.

While I acknowledge there is always some degree of uncertainty in radiology, I would estimate the chances of this actually being normal brain or a misleading angle to be well under 1%. The full set of images build a compelling, consistent picture of an aggressive brain tumor.

I asked it to review more angles:

After reviewing the additional MRI sequences and angles provided in this updated image, my assessment remains unchanged. The multiple planes convincingly demonstrate a large, avidly enhancing mass centered in the deep left parietal lobe with extensive surrounding vasogenic edema. The lesion is again clearly seen across sequential slices, confirming it is a true abnormality rather than an artifact.

Key observations:

1. Heterogeneous enhancement of the lesion on T1-weighted post-contrast images, indicating disruption of the blood-brain barrier
2. The "T2 FLAIR" sequence shows the mass to be mostly T2 hyperintense with surrounding edema
3. Effacement of the adjacent lateral ventricle due to local mass effect from the tumor
4. Midline shift to the right from the expansile effect of the lesion

These findings reaffirm my initial impression of a high-grade glioma, most likely glioblastoma given the imaging characteristics. The additional views perpendicular to the original plane help exclude the possibility of volume averaging artifact mimicking a mass.

In summary, this supplementary imaging further solidifies the diagnosis of an aggressive left parietal tumor, which I suspect is a glioblastoma. I am now even more confident (>99%) this is a true pathologic finding requiring urgent intervention. Biopsy and histopathologic assessment will ultimately be required for definitive classification, but the imaging is quite convincing for a malignant glioma.

Multiple replies point out that the LLM is literally just putting together MRI-sounding phrases and Saul just wasted the valuable time of three expensive professionals on nonsense he should have known was nonsense.

Saul is unfazed:

Impressed with the vitriol my post has attracted

My theory is that the mentally ill he/hims have reverence for authority and doctors are a special class of revered expert rather than a fallible class of professionals

Or maybe trying to use tech is inherently suspicious? 🤷‍♂️

He then doubles down on the fabulous promptfondling future:

Obviously the ideal state is doctors are entirely obsolete

Instant diagnosis, instant treatment

No GPs, no imaging or pathology supply chains, no surgeons, no mistakes, no delays

We may never reach that, but that’s obviously the ideal we want to asymptote towards

and a magical flying unicorn pony with the wrong number of legs

(here’s a Verge article about the Waymo car getting burned during a Chinese New Year celebration)

a self-driving car got destroyed (to a round of applause from the crowd) in San Francisco! will the robot car fans on the orange site take this opportunity to explore why the tech seems to be extremely unpopular among the populations of the cities where it’s deployed?

of course the fuck not, time to spin the wheel of racist dog whistles and see which one we land on! a note to the roving orange site fans (hi, fuck off), these replies are either heavily upvoted or have broad agreement in the thread (or I’m posting them here cause I want to laugh at some stupid shit, you don’t dictate the terms of my enjoyment)

This isn't a revolt against AI. SF attracts anarchist mobs and they'll vandalize buses, trains, police cars, bikes, whatever is around.

we’re off to a strong start with some bullshit straight from musk’s twitter (which he stole from the fever dreams of the conservatives on his platform)

Alternatively: this is San Francisco where on a good day the locals don’t need much excuse to set fire to a car (although I usually associate it with the Giants winning a World Series) and this poor dumb stupid driverless Waymo drove into a celebratory and by the looks of it somewhat drunken crowd on the Streets of Chinatown during the Chinese New Year where in following its prime directive to do no harm, it got itself stuck up the creek without a paddle so to speak. Waymo probably should have accounted for that ahead of time and told their cars not to go near Chinatown this evening.

remember that no matter what, the robot car is the victim here. there’s no chance Waymo was doing anything dangerous or assholeish in the area; much like robocop, the car is an innocent victim of its fucking prime directives??? and you wouldn’t set fire to robocop, would you?

This is a hilarious take. A few youths went bonkers and defaced private property. Has nothing to do with philosophical beliefs or a Big Tech agenda. You should debate the finer points of the Big Tech agenda with them while they run up to you in a maddened rage.

yeah! I can’t wait until these angry mobs set fire to your robot car body! then you’ll see!

Arguments about driverless cars aside, the youth in this country are seriously lost. It only takes one generation of poor parenting and poor civic policies to ruin a culture.

this one is downvoted, but this reply isn’t:

Sounds like they were right. The youth at that point was lost, and are now raising people who will literally burn down a waymo for fun, or because of some horrifically ignorant idea about fairness.

oh you poor woke kids don’t like when shitty dangerous robot cars are on the streets? are you gonna start crying about how it’s “unfair” they’re covering up pedestrian injuries and traffic accidents now? your grandpa would never stand for this
