Hello peeps.

Since I noticed no FOSS/Proprietary games like Twisted Metal exists, I want to make a FOSS version.

I don't have a name set, but "Twisted Steel" sound right.

Should I create this?

(I'm considering using Godot as I'm no advanced programmer.)

XPilot is a multi-player 2D space game. Some features are borrowed from classics like the Atari coin-ups Asteroids and Gravitar, and the home-computer games Thrust (Commodore 64) and Gravity Force (Commodore Amiga).

Game objectives and gameplay are adjustable through a number of options. Examples modes of the game:

  • Classical dogfight; equipped with only your gun, you have to rely on your maneuvering and tactical skills
  • Team; fight together, steal other teams's treasures (involves flying around with a ball in a string, much like in Thrust) and blow up their targets (which are, no doubt, heavily guarded)
  • All out nuclear war; chose carefully between more than twenty weapon and defense systems to stay alive and annihilate your enemies
  • Race; make it through the deadly course before your opponents

Xconq is a general strategy game system. It is a complete system that includes all the components: a portable engine, graphical interfaces for Unix/Linux/X11, Macintosh, and Windows, multiple AIs, networking for multi-player games, and an extensive game library.

In addition to Xconq's "standard" game, which is similar to the classic Empire/Empire Deluxe games of years ago, the game library includes games for ancient civilizations, the Peloponnesian War, the Roman Civil War, Frederician strategy, Napoleonic strategy, Gettysburg at a brigade scale, the Russian revolution, the Normandy invasion, WWII at scales from tactical to grand strategic, Beirut street fighting, voyages of discovery, African exploration, and many others, including space and fantasy games.

Xconq's forte is turn-based strategy with overhead map views. Tiles are hexagonal, and worlds may be very large; the largest in the library is an 800x320 map of the world, a 256,000 hex monster! The game design language GDL is a declarative language where you define the units, terrain, etc, then fill in tables defining their interaction. Literally hundreds of different tables are available to the game designer. For graphics, the Xconq library includes hundreds of unit images and tiles that may be used by a game.

All this makes Xconq especially interesting for games about unusual or lesser-known strategic situations; it is unique in its ability to model the conflicts and strategies of any period in history.

NetHack is a single player dungeon exploration game that runs on a wide variety of computer systems, with a variety of graphical and text interfaces all using the same game engine. Unlike many other Dungeons & Dragons-inspired games, the emphasis in NetHack is on discovering the detail of the dungeon and not simply killing everything in sight - in fact, killing everything in sight is a good way to die quickly. Each game presents a different landscape - the random number generator provides an essentially unlimited number of variations of the dungeon and its denizens to be discovered by the player in one of a number of characters: you can pick your race, your role, and your gender.

Bos Wars is a futuristic real time strategy game (RTS). In a RTS game, the player has to combat his enemies while developing his war economy. Everything runs in real-time, as opposed to turn-based games where the player always has to wait for his turn. The trick is to balance the effort put into building his economy and building an army to defend and attack the enemies.

Bos Wars has a dynamic rate based economy. Energy is produced by power plants and magma gets pumped from hot spots. Buildings and mobile units are also built at a continuous rate. Control of larger parts of the map creates the potential to increase your economy throughput. Holding key points like roads and passages allow for different strategies.

It is possible to play against human opponents over LAN, internet, or against the computer. Bos Wars successfully runs under Linux, MS Windows, BSD, and Mac OS X.

OpenRA is an open source game engine reimplementation and remake of several Command & Conquer games, including Red Alert. It is built using OpenGL and SDL, has support for HiDPI, and is cross platform, supporting Windows, Linux, macOS, and FreeBSD. The engine has support for custom mods via an SDK. The games are remade for modern computers with updated gameplay, new campaigns, user-created and curated maps, and online play. Deviations from the originals included a choice between “right click” and classic “left click” control schemes, an overhauled sidebar interfaces for managing productions, support for game replays and an observer interface designed for video game live streaming. Fog of war that obscures the battlefield outside your units’ line of sight, civilian structures that can be captured to provide benefits and units gain experience as they fight and improve when they earn new ranks. The game supports handicapping players, Discord integration and community ladders. Experimental support for the remastered assets was published in 2023 as a binary compatible yet separate mod.

Coinciding with the release of Command & Conquer Remastered Collection in 2020, Electronic Arts released the original source code for both Tiberian Dawn and Red Alert through GitHub under the GNU General Public License in collaboration between EA and the Command & Conquer community to aid in the development of mods. The source release has also allowed community developers to produce source ports of the original PC version of the game which was released as freeware. This now includes unofficial ports to platforms such as the PlayStation Vita derived from an upstream project called Vanilla-Conquer.
