Researchers analyzed the eating habits of nearly 200,000 individuals, discovering that vegetarians consumed 1.3 percentage points more ultra-processed foods compared to meat eaters. For vegans, the difference was marginally smaller at 1.2 percentage points. The study concluded: “This UK-based study found higher UPF consumption in vegetarian diets and lower in diets with a modest amount of meat or fish.”

While such foods are engineered for convenience and appeal, they are often criticized for their health implications. A previous study linked high consumption of plant-based UPFs to an increased risk of cardiovascular diseases, further complicating the narrative that all plant-based diets are inherently healthier.

The letter cited a study projecting that the global obesity epidemic could cost the economy $4 trillion annually by 2035, a figure comparable to the economic toll of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. Beyond economic risks, investors argue that failing to act on this issue exposes companies to reputational harm and regulatory scrutiny.

The city of Aomori, which sees heavy snow every year, started a trial in a swimming pool at an abandoned elementary school in December [2022] to explore the feasibility of producing energy by utilizing the temperature difference between stored snow and the surrounding air.

According to Forte, challenges include finding a large-scale facility to store snow as well as securing heated air during cold seasons.

Mitch Marner exhaled and said out loud what so many within the Toronto Maple Leafs organization were probably thinking.

Faye Schulman (1919 - 2021)

Faye Schulman, born on this day in 1919, was a Jewish partisan and photographer who took up arms against the Nazis who were responsible for killing her family.

On August 14th, 1942, the Germans killed 1,850 Jews from the "Lenin" ghetto (named after Lenin, Poland, where Faye was from), including her parents, sisters, and younger brother. Faye was spared for her ability to develop photographs, and the Nazis ordered Faye to develop their photographs of the massacre. Later, she cited taking a photo of her dead family in a mass grave as the impetus to take up arms.

During a partisan raid on the camp, Faye fled to the forests and joined the Molotava Brigade, a partisan group mostly comprised of escaped Soviet Red Army POWs. She was accepted because her brother-in-law had been a doctor and they were desperate for anyone who knew anything about medicine. Faye served the group as a nurse from September 1942 to July 1944, even though she had no previous medical experience.

During another raid on the Lenin ghetto, Faye succeeded in recovering her old photographic equipment. During the next two years, she took over a hundred photographs, developing the medium format negatives under blankets and making "sun prints" during the day. While on missions, Faye buried the camera and tripod to keep it safe. Schulman is the only known Jewish partisan photographer from this era.

After the war, Faye and her husband Morris left for a displaced-persons camp in West Germany, where they smuggled people and weapons to support the movement for an independent Israel, making plans to emigrate to British-controlled Palestine themselves.

Len Deighton published his first spy novel, The Ipcress File, shortly after the blockbuster success of the very first Bond movie, Dr. No. When The Ipcress File became a bestseller, Bond producers Harry Saltzman and Albert R. Broccoli tapped Deighton to pen the script for the sequel, From Russia with Love. Not much of his screenplay made it to the final film, but the producers enjoyed working with Deighton.

Saltzman decided to adapt The Ipcress File for the screen in the hope of launching a second spy movie franchise that could run alongside the Bond films. He cast Caine to play the lead role of Palmer, with the aim of bringing him back for an endless string of sequels. The Ipcress File was conceived as the polar opposite of the Bond films, with a naturalistic style drawing from the world of kitchen-sink drama. It seemed like a sure-fire path to success, but the Palmer movies never reached the same blockbuster heights as the Bond movies.

Palmer’s stories are the opposite of Bond’s in every way. Whereas the Bond movies offered lighthearted escapism, the Palmer movies offered gritty realism. Whereas Bond is characterized as posh and upper-class, Palmer is a working-class hero. Whereas the Bond films carried an optimistic message about good triumphing over evil and maintaining the world order, the Palmer films took a bleaker and more pessimistic approach to their storytelling. The cynical tone and grounded, naturalistic style of the Palmer movies had more in common with John le Carré’s espionage stories than 007’s globetrotting adventures.

So... I've been using a small electric pump for my bikes and e-scooters over the last few years.

They are nice, but really aren't designed to be used as often as I do.

I'm a fan of low-tech gear, so I'm looking for a good quality floor pump that will last the next 20+ years. Obviously, it needs to be serviceable and have easily replaceable parts. And it needs to be accurate, for sure. LOL

I'm reading reviews from Wirecutter and various cycling sites, and they are all over the place with recommendations. I think a lot of their choices are driven by affiliate links, so there's that.

Above: An E653-1000 "Inaho" train set stopped at Niigata Station in 2021. The livery and plaque is meant to represent the sun setting over fields of rice against a view of the Sea of Japan.

The E653 was first built in 1997 for the new "Fresh Hitachi" limited express service on the Joban Line. Between 2011 and 2015, all E653 train sets were retired and replaced with E657s. The retired E653s were refurbished and repurposed for the Inaho limited express service on the Uetsu Main Line in 2013 and the Shirayuki limited express service on the Shin'etsu Line in 2015.

The Inaho fleet is eight E653-1000s. The original E653s were upgraded with wider seating, Green Cars (first class seating), and new liveries that depict the area of Japan they operate in. Starting in 2017, individual train sets were repainted with custom liveries, including a pair of trains repainted in 2023. One to resemble the original Fresh Hitachi service and another to resemble the old JNR 485 series that the E653-1000s replaced. Additionally, E653-1100 sets (also made from retired E653s) were added to the service in 2022.

A group of researchers has unveiled a device the size and shape of a lollipop that produces nine different flavors: sugar, salt, citric acid, cherry, passion fruit, green tea, milk, durian, and grapefruit. By combining this with a visual illusion in virtual reality, the researchers hope to trick the brain successfully into thinking it is tasting the real thing.

The flavors are produced by chemicals embedded in a pocket of agarose gel, writes IEEE Spectrum. When a voltage is applied to the gel, the chemicals are transported to the surface in a liquid that then mixes with saliva on the tongue, just like a real lollipop. If the voltage is increased, the taste gets stronger.
